…and the winner of Mum of the Month December 2012 is Liz Thompson from Caliba!

What is the story behind your business name?
My business name Caliba came about in a weird way. I originally wanted my business name to be calibre which is a degree or grade of excellence or worth but unfortunately I couldn’t register it. So I opted for the same name but with a different spelling as I was working in street wear fashion and was very influenced by that culture which put a little twist on things.

How long have you been in business?
I have been a graphic designer for in excess of 15 years but didn’t start my own freelance business until 2002. At the time it was more a side project but since having my daughter in 2010 I decided it was time to bite the bullet and work for myself full time.

How many kids do you have?
I have one daughter, Scarlett, aged 2.

What are the high and lows of running your own business?
I love running my own business and being my own boss. I was never cut out to be stuck in an office and found myself highly distracted. Working from home really suits me and having my daughter with me and not in childcare was something I really wanted to do and I was blessed to be able to do so. Highs in business sense in forming great relationships with clients who are loyal, diverse and easy going. I am lucky to have such great people who I work with on a weekly and monthly basis and we have a mutual respect.
The lows are there is never enough time in the day, especially with an energetic 2 year old. I mainly work when she is sleeping and that can mean till all hours of the night which I don’t always mind, however being tired and cranky the next day is not fun.

What are the plans for the future for your business?
I plan to take on more business when my daughter goes to school. I don’t do much advertising of my business as most clients are work of mouth which I truly appreciate. I have done some local advertising in Point Cook and offer a special logo deal to other Point Cook Mums as a way of supporting my female comrades in business.

What are some highlights (success) in your business so far?
Some successors I’ve had in my business in the last couple of mouth is securing 2 international corporate footwear brands. I also have a few interstate clients which goes to show it doesn’t matter where you live to have a business that crosses states and countries.

What’s one piece of advice you could give to other mum’s who run a business and are struggling with motivation and confidence?
My favourite quote is “Find something you love to do and you’ll never work at day in your life”. I am living that dream. For me, being successful isn’t always monetary, its how you feel about what you do and how you make others feel. There is nothing better than doing a logo or whatever piece of artwork and having the client say how much they love it and can’t wait to share it with the world. I find that part very satisfying and can’t put a price on that feeling. I also am a fan of bartering services. If someone approaches me and they have a service I would use, I happily trade my time with theirs. Its win-win as along as you both agree to the terms.
